"CONSOLIDATED
COMBINED TRANSPORT SYSTEM"

The
Need
Attica
Region is the largest Region in terms of population in Greece. Citizens
in Attica make use of a large number of means of transportation
everyday. The transportation from one place to
another often requires the combination of several means of transport (i.e. car,
metro, bus, boat etc.), thus making the choice for the optimal mean(s) a
very complex task.
Citizens and visitors need to choose the optimal combination of all the
available transport means to move from one place to another on a daily
basis.
The Attica Region recognized that crucial need and implemented this project.
The
Project
Agiltech planned and developed a web-based application for the Attica
Region. The application is a planning tool that enables citizens and
visitors to find out all the options of “navigation” from one place to
another, planning “routes” taking into consideration all the available
means of transport. The application generates and offers valuable
information not only to the public but internally as well.
The application is available on the portal of Attica Region. It informs
the citizens of the optimum combination of the requested trip within
Attica Region. The application generates more information regarding the
trip such as the estimated time, alternative routes by car, by bus, on
foot etc. The application takes into consideration every combination
between all public means of transport, car and “on foot” routings.
The system generates a “recommended routing” based on the criteria given
by the user. The user may choose the “quickest trip”, the “shortest
trip” or the trip with “the least walking distance” or the one using the
preferred means of transport (i.e. bus). The user sets the starting and
ending point of the routing, the preferred means of transport and the
rest preferred parameters. The system processes the data given and
returns the “recommended routing” along with alternative “routings”. The
“recommended routing” is displayed on a digital map followed by detailed
step-by-step directions and information such as total time of the trip,
walking distance etc.
Moreover, the Incident Management application sub-system that was
installed in Attica Region enables the employees of the Region to know
the exact prevailing traffic conditions in the areas within its
jurisdiction.
The integrated system operates since August 2009 and is available on the
Attica Region site:
http://www.atticaroute.gr. The application is also
accessible through PDAs and smart phones.
The project was funded by European and national funds.
The
Result
The
integrated system enables the employees of the Region to manage quickly
urgent incidents and inform the citizens promptly. The system makes
useful information available on the portal, contributing to the high
quality services that citizens experience. The benefits are many:
-
Upgrade of the quality of services/facilities available to citizens
-
Raising awareness of public transportation
-
Reduction of the car use, contributing to the “green economy”
-
Better quality of life as the application makes everyday choices
easier
-
Better surveillance of the prevailing traffic conditions within
Attica Region
